Investigating particulate pollution on trees
Key StageKey Stage 4
Summary of Investigation
In this investigation, pupils use simple equipment to take rapid measurements of particulate pollution along a belt transect to assess the extent to which vehicle emissions are dispersed with distance from the main road. The pupils sample the trees for particulates using sticky tape. Random sampling techniques are used in the laboratory for analysis. Sound sensors may also be used along the transect to collect supporting / alternative data. Pupils could use the data collected to explain the economic effect upon local residents living in different locations around the Heath, from increased air pollution emissions. Secondary data may also be considered.
